Focus on our motorbike tours – The Golden Triangle

Wondering what a motorcycle ride with OffRoad Laos Adventures looks like ?

We gave you a quick overview in this article. Now, let's go into more details and explore together the favorite circuit of our bikers : 7-day motorcycle tour, Mysterious Golden Triangle by the tracks. Name rather evocative, right? It inspires mystery and legend ... A strange place on the borders with Laos, Burma and Thailand, the Golden Triangle was once a major commercial hub. This region has remained a stunning place with its Chinese casinos with Italian columns. Well, enough for the history lesson ... Let's now discover in detail our 7-day motorcycle trail in the north-west of Laos.

Few details

Let’s start with few numbers. This motorcycle raid has 7 days of riding, during which you will go through about 1300 kilometers. 70% of the time, you will be off-road on dirt tracks or forest paths. The remaining 30%, you will ride on paved sections. You will leave Luang Prabang on the first day to get back there only 7 days later. I will allow you to explore remote and isolated areas. During your raid, you will sleep in hotels and guesthouses. These last ones have quite the same comfort as hotels, the only difference is that there are fewer rooms.

This itinerary is made for experienced riders having one or more off-road trips to their credit. Certain crossings present technical difficulties that beginners will have difficulty passing. In addition to that, because of its length, this tour requires to be in a good physical condition. Indeed, riding 5 to 6 hours per day on forest tracks will be fatiguing for your forearms since the 3rd day. So get ready, this is not an easy trip, but really the adventure of a lifetime !

Day 1 - 125km, 50% off-road

A tuk-tuk will pick you up at your hotel at 08:20 and drop you off at our agency. You will meet our team and your English-speaking Lao guide. After a coffee, the fitting of your equipment, some explanations on the following days and a lot of advices, you will go on your motorcycles and leave Luang Prabang by the tracks of farmers.

This is a charming city and a great starting and ending point for your tour. Its region is full of country trails and rice fields leading from villages to villages of wooden houses. On the way you will make a lunch stop at Kuang Si waterfalls where you can enjoy a good swim in the turquoise water before going back on your bike for 50 km of tracks along the Mekong River. You will reach the small town of Sayabury where you will spend the night.

Day 2 - 190km, 40% off-road

After a local breakfast of course with rice, omelet or Laotian soup, you will start your day with a mountain road rising to almost 1900 meters high. You will crisscross the heights, between tribal villages and picture stops on top of a mountain. Then you will have lunch on the way in a small typical restaurant, according to the speed of the group. The second part of the day, you will ride on a wide track spinning in the middle of paddy fields sometimes a few kilometers away from the Thai border. Arrival in Xieng Hone late afternoon. You will be in the depths of Laos, no chance to meet foreigners in this little tourist area.

Day 3 - 185km, 70% off-road

Breakfast with local people in this isolated village, only a small street gargle serves as a restaurant. Visit the centenary temple hand painted by the monks of the village and decorated with impressive Buddhist frescoes. You will take the track early in the morning to cross several mountains and valleys to the wild border between Laos and Thailand.

You will cross the Mekong River alongside your bike on typical wooden boats.

An unforgettable epic moment! Immediately after the crossing, you will be alone in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by vegetable gardens surrounding a single track for several hours. It will lead you from villages of the Khamu tribe to Lao Lum villages to Houay Say, the Thai border town.

Day 4 - 210km, 60% off-road

The road will lead you to the heart of the Golden Triangle, where in a well-defined isolated perimeter, a curious place worthy of a sci-fi movie is overflowing with Chinese-style luxury casinos with Italian statues. At the edge of the Mekong River, you will have the opportunity to sit to admire its architectural quirks and the comings and goings of the transport boats sailing between these 3 mystical countries: Laos, Thailand and Burma! From there, adventure and isolation continue along a red dirt track and its river crossings. You will follow the Burmese border along the Mekong to reach the tiny village of Muang Meung at the end of the day. Tropical vegetation exuberant in these not-so-visited tracks and dotted with small villages of mixed tribes.

Day 5 - 225km, 40% off-road

Woken up early by the roosters, you will surely leave with regret this immersion among these villages and inhabitants of this remote Laos, living apart from the rest of the world. You will take again the bikes to go down the valley by the track until the road leading to Vieng Poukha, a small village of the Lao Lum tribe. You will stop and get energy by having a lunch in a local restaurant.

You will ride again, heading Nale, a small fishing village lost in the valley of the Namtha River.

Day 6 - 220km, 70% off-road

During the morning, you will ride on a farm track for about 75 km, through rice fields, banana plantations and farmer villages of the Khamus tribe living in autarky.

Crossings of rivers and technical sections wait for you there. After lunch in Oudomxay where you have joined the road for 1 hour, you will engage in a new track, wide and not very technical which reaches the valley of Muang Nga.

Arrived in your rooms, you will have the opportunity to leave your bag and the heavy gear to visit with your guide this small isolated but comfortable city dominated by an old temple.

Day 7 - 170km, 65% off-road

Until the last day the adventure does not stop! You will be immersed in the jungle for 85 km of tracks, villages of tribes and splendid landscapes. Some technical sections but not enough to put you in danger because as usual you will be following your guide that secures the convoy. Back on the main road for the last hours of riding, before arriving quietly in Luang Prabang, UNESCO World Heritage city and finish your journey to our office.
