How to well prepare your motorbike trip in Laos with friends?

A motorbike adventure with friends is the dream vacation for any biker :) All the ingredients are combined: adventure, scenery, great memories, what can we ask for more ?

The idea sounds good; however, it still requires a bit of preparation. At Off Road Laos Adventures, we’ve been organizing motorcycle tours for more than 5 years, so we can say that we are experts in successful motorcycle expeditions ;) In this article, we reveal everything, absolutely everything, so that your motorcycle trip with friends will be the adventure of a lifetime !

The master key of a great off-road trip: gather friends with the same riding experience

An off-road trip will be a nightmare if your friends have too different levels of riding. Why? Because the more experienced will be frustrated to wait for the others. And the newbies will put pressure on themselves to keep up with the pace, and probably get out of their safety zone. If the riding backgrounds are slightly different, it will be ok, but you’ll all have to agree before departure on the expectations of each.

In addition to that, it is better to know your mates. An off-road trip is an adventure, with moments of challenge and fatigue. Knowing how people react facing stress helps avoiding useless arguments.

Finally, for your information, the more you will be, the more the price per person will be interesting. What is it due to? Shared costs, which are spread over all participants. Thus, it is not recommended to go with only 1 or 2 lads. On the other hand, you’ll get the best rates with a group from 4 to 7 bikers.

Choose a well fitted itinerary and at the right time period for an unforgettable experience

Depending on your motorcycle experience and your expectations, we will put together the perfect program for you. The itinerary will be thought to be doable, but still with challenging parts. Because that's what makes the adventure, right? It is therefore crucial that you be very specific when it comes to describing the riding background of each participant.

Secondly, the duration of the trip is as important as the itinerary. One can be good technically, but with the physical condition of an old man. In this case, we don’t recommend a 10-day adventure. Because riding 5-6 hours on the highway, it's ok, but 5 hours on mountain tracks, it's not the same story! In case of doubt, we will prefer adventures from 5 to 7 days. And we will leave the 10-day expeditions for the most enduring riders 😊

Finally, the time of the year also matters a lot. This will impact on the landscapes but especially on the presence of mud 😊 Thus, riding from October to December is the guarantee to have wet sections. Fun guaranteed! For bikers more focused on the human adventure, we will prefer January to April. The tracks are drier so technically easier.

Men on bikes, wives in the support vehicle ?

This is a wrong idea! We can guarantee you for having experienced it 😊 If you want to preserve the peace in your couple, do not try to bring your wives into the support 4WD. They will be shaken all day long and will let you know about it when you’ll meet in the evening. The right option is to prefer two distinct groups. The bikers go for their off-road trip while the wives enjoy the charms of Luang Prabang.

Prepare your trip to Laos well in advance

Finding a time period that suits everyone is the main difficulty of a trip with friends. It's not easy to combine holidays and days off, especially with family and work. So, as soon as you know who you want to ride with, start by setting a date. Because without a specific date, this adventure is only a project.

Once your group is set, the route defined, and the date chosen, you want to buy your plane tickets quickly. The price of flights flies when you approach the date becomes closer. Thus, to avoid unpleasant surprises, you should do it as soon as possible. Once the tickets are bought, most of the preparation work is done, you can relax. I think you have understood that a motorbike off road tour with friends is not organized in one shot. It requires a little preparation, anticipation and especially communication. All this combined, this adventure will be remembered for decades :) The one you will tell your grandkids, the one you will talk about around a beer with friends, a unique experience. So do not wait anymore, call your fellow travelers, and then contact us to organize your adventure in Laos.

>> For solo riders, we also offer tours to join, with set dates and itineraries.
